    Chief Operating Officer

    THE CENTER

    The Center for Reproductive Rights -- a global human rights organization that uses constitutional and international law to secure women's reproductive freedom -- seeks a Chief Operating Officer.

    Founded in 1992 and located in New York City, the Center for Reproductive Rights is a non-profit legal advocacy organization dedicated to promoting women's equality worldwide by guaranteeing reproductive rights as human rights. Sixteen years after its founding, the Center remains the only reproductive rights organization that combines U.S. and international legal advocacy. Its mission remains straightforward and ambitious: to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect and fulfill.

    THE POSITION

    Reporting to the President, the Chief Operating Officer manages the internal operational functions of this dynamic organization, including finance, human resources, administration, and information technology, as well as the Center's growth through strategic and annual planning. The Center has an operating budget of $9 million and a workforce of approximately 55. The COO oversees nine staff.

    The Chief Operating Officer is a key member of the Center's management team. S/he is a thought leader, problem-solver, and facilitator, focusing internally on the operations of the Center, the success of all programs (legal, development, and communication, as well as those departments directly under his/her supervision), and the interdepartmental coordination of cross-institutional initiatives.

    While staff will always have direct access to the President, the Chief Operating Officer is the "go-to" person in the President's absence. It is critically important, therefore, that the COO gain the trust and confidence of the President and the management team and serve as their partner, advisor, and implementer for institutional strategy and internal operations. Having the technical as well as the human skills necessary to coordinate the daily activities of a complex advocacy and human rights organization is of the highest priority.

    • Successfully clarify and integrate the COO role, which is new to the Center: develop a strong working relationship of trust with the President, President's Office, management team members, and staff; fine-tune the responsibilities of the position and how it manages and interfaces with the people, systems, and work of the Center;
    • Seamlessly assume strategic and annual planning, implementation, and reporting responsibilities;
    • Assist the President's Office in transitioning the responsibilities for Board reporting, meeting preparation, and logistics;
    • Free up the President to more effectively focus on external priorities and internal program strategy;
    • Assist with the alignment of organization structure with the Center's ambitious, recently completed, three-year strategic plan.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Minimum 10 years of strategic, senior-level operations experience;
    • Excellent leadership and management skills, and a successful track record of supervising and collaborating with staff in a manner that is flexible and supportive, yet ensures accountability;
    • Experience in strategic planning and institutional development;
    • Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with a strong leader, a results-oriented senior management team, and a committed staff with high standards and expectations; sound judgment and a sense of balance to know when to move with the tide and when to push back;
    • Effective and persuasive communicator in writing and orally, with the ability to translate complex concepts to individuals at all levels;
    • Strong experience with financial forecasting, budgeting, and modeling; experience with or demonstrated facility in learning and optimizing financial, fundraising, and HRIS systems; proficiency with Excel;
    • Keen analytical and problem-solving skills that enable sound strategic decision making; resourceful in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems;
    • Experience with 501(c)3 nonprofits ideal;
    • MBA a plus.

    PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

    The ideal candidate will be:

    • Committed to the mission, purpose, and values of the Center;
    • Committed to developing, recruiting, and retaining a diverse team;
    • A dedicated leader/manager, collaborative and team oriented, who can take charge, build consensus, and effect change;
