U.S. Support for Reproductive Rights Abroad

The U.S., a leader in population assistance since the 1960's, is currently failing to provide its fair share of needed funding. Funding levels sharply decreased beginning in 1996 and have remained grossly inadequate. Leading U.S. research organizations have stated that the impact of the 35% decrease in funding for overseas population and family planning assistance in 1996 resulted in approximately 4 million unplanned pregnancies, 1.6 million abortions, 8000 maternal deaths, and 134,000 infant deaths due to increased high-risk births. The US allocated $25,000,000 to the UNFPA for the fiscal year 2005.
