Intro to Senate Leadership Bill S. 20
On January 24, 2005, Senator Reid introduced S. 20, the "Prevention First Act." Prevention First is an expansive family planning bill that would allow for greater preventative health care services and education programs to help reduce unwanted pregnancy and abortion. Additionally, it would require that hospital emergency rooms provide information about and access to emergency contraception. A companion bill, HR 1709, has also been introduced in the House.

Nancy Northup, President of The Center for Reproductive Rights, thanks Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney [D-NY] for offering the Best Help for Rape Victims Act that would require medical professionals to inform rape survivors of the availability of emergency contraception to prevent pregnancy as a result of rape. The legislation has been referred to the House Judiciary committee.
