When Voters Learn of Roberts’ Record, Support Plummets According to Focus Groups

Results of a recent focus group conducted for a coalition of reproductive rights organizations show that while the public is initially supportive of Supreme Court nominee John Roberts, they are currently uninformed about his views. Support for President Bush’s nominee plummets when voters learn about his record.

The group – conducted on-line with a national sample by nationally recognized pollster Mark Mellman – indicated that voters prefer an open-minded and non-partisan nominee for the Supreme Court. After hearing about Roberts’ available record, participants concluded that he is just the opposite. The information leads voters to conclude that Roberts is a partisan Republican who has already made up his mind on important issues they care about.

Initially, voters did not feel Roe v. Wade was in jeopardy. However, after hearing about Roberts troubling record and conflicting statements, voters conclude that he would be hostile to Roe v. Wade.

Results of the groups were released today in a conference call with reporters.
