Center for Reproductive Rights Statement on Passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist
Statement from Nancy Northup, President, Center for Reproductive Rights

Upon the death of the Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, released the following statement:

"The Center for Reproductive Rights expresses our condolences to the family and friends of Chief Justice William Rehnquist.

"While we fundamentally disagreed with Chief Justice Rehnquist's opinions in Roe v. Wade and its progeny, we commend his public service to the nation and his commitment to the crucial role of an independent judiciary in our American democracy.

"This moment belongs to remembering Chief Justice Rehnquist and reflecting on his legacy.

"The time ahead will call for attention to the future of the Supreme Court and its protection of the rights and liberties of all Americans. With two vacancies and the stakes so high, we will be calling on the President and the Senate to take the necessary time to allow for a fair and open nomination process."
