Nancy Northup, President of the Center for Reproductive Rights, the nation’s leading pro-choice legal voice, today released the following statement on Judge John G. Roberts' nomination to Chief Justice on the Supreme Court:

"Judge Roberts' nomination to Chief Justice underscores the importance of a full and open confirmation process. It is now even more critical that the Senate thoroughly explore, and Judge Roberts fully disclose, his judicial philosophy on the Constitution's protection of the right to privacy, including women's freedom to make decisions about their reproductive health.

"It is equally important that the President and the Senate take the time and deliberation necessary to ensure such a full and open process takes place. The health and lives of American women depend on it."
