Abortion and the Killing of Dr. Tiller

To the Editor:Re “An Abortion Battle, Fought to the Death” (front page, July 26): Dr. George Tiller’s murder focused attention momentarily on the harassment and attacks abortion providers face, but they are a daily reality at clinics across the country. Just as the lawyers who work on behalf of individuals wrongly detained play an instrumental role in ensuring the right to be free from arbitrary detention, doctors and clinic employees who provide services in the face of severe threats play an essential role in ensuring women’s fundamental rights to health, self-determination and equality. Our federal, state and local governments have a responsibility to safeguard these doctors. But we must also recognize abortion providers as courageous individuals who defend women’s human rights. And this responsibility lies with all of us.Nancy Northup
