"Well designed, clearly presented, and copiously documented, Tipping the Scales is an essential reference for attorneys, journalists, elected officials, activists and students interested in reproductive rights and the law. No one serious about these matters can afford to be without it."
Frederick Clarkson, author, Eternal Hostility: The Struggle Between Theocracy and Democracy

"The efforts of so-called 'Christian' right wing groups to eliminate legal access to choice violate the most sacred principles of all religions. The Center for Reproductive Rights' newest publication, Tipping the Scales, is an indispensable guide for people of faith who want to know about and counter the right."
Frances Kissling, President, Catholics for a Free Choice

"The comprehensive and detailed analysis in Tipping the Scales reveals a serious danger to American constitutional principles from a well-financed and zealous brand of radical lawyers and their supporters. Every fair-minded person should be concerned about where this might lead."
Norman Dorsen, Stokes Professor of Law, NYU Law School, and President, ACLU 1976-1991

In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized for the first time that the individual rights to privacy and liberty embedded in the U.S. Constitution encompass a woman's right to choose between abortion and childbirth. The Court's decision in Roe v. Wade all but ended the back-alley and self-induced abortions that once killed hundreds if not thousands of women each year.

Now, a dangerous breed of radical right lawyers is ripping at the very fabric of the U.S. Constitution.

Tipping the Scales is the first comprehensive investigation into extreme right organizations using the law to try to end a woman's right to choose. Starting with a review of their history and work, this exposé profiles the top 12 institutions that threaten to replace democracy with a singular fundamentalist Christian agenda.
