Center Sues FDA for Denying Women Over-the-Counter Access to
Emergency Contraception

The Center for Reproductive Rights went to federal court on January 21st to file suit against the Acting Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration for failing to grant over-the-counter status to emergency contraception. EC has the potential to prevent as many as half the unplanned pregnancies in the U.S., including the 700,000 that now end in abortion.

Celebrating Roe

On January 22nd - two days after the inauguration of this country's outspokenly anti-choice President - Roe v. Wade turned 32. The landmark decision, which recognized a woman's right to abortion based on the constitutional guarantee of privacy, has never been more vulnerable. With several retirements likely on the Supreme Court in the next four years, President Bush is poised to deliver the ultimate prize to his ultra-conservative backers: an anti-choice Court that could overturn Roe and give states the power to set abortion policy.
