Celebrating Roe
On January 22nd - two days after the inauguration of this country's
outspokenly anti-choice President - Roe v. Wade turned 32. The
landmark decision, which recognized a woman's right to abortion
based on the constitutional guarantee of privacy, has never been
more vulnerable. With several retirements likely on the Supreme
Court in the next four years, President Bush is poised to deliver the
ultimate prize to his ultra-conservative backers: an anti-choice
Court that could overturn Roe and give states the power to set
abortion policy.
Our groundbreaking report, What if Roe Fell? The State-by-State
Consequences of Overturning Roe v. Wade, reveals that some
seventy million women in thirty states could lose their right to
abortion within a year if Roe were overturned.
