The Role: 

The Jr Press Officer reports to the Director of Media Relations and will work closely with the U.S. Press Officer, Global Press Officer, and various department staff.  S/he will also work in close coordination with other members of the communications and program teams. The Jr Press Officer is responsible for supporting the U.S.  and Global Press Officers’ creative and aggressive strategies for increasing the Center’s visibility in the media within the U.S. at the local, state, and national levels as well as our Global efforts; drafting press releases, pitching, and coordinating media interviews; assisting in developing supporting materials for all media campaigns; and assisting to prep Center representatives for media appearances. 

The Jr Press Officer plays a strategic and operational role in the Communications Department, assisting to continually surveying the media landscape for upcoming opportunities and challenges—and working with colleagues within the department to execute strategies for responding to them, often on very tight deadlines.  

This position will be based in New York City. 


The Jr Press Officer’s primary job responsibilities include, but not limited to: 

  • Draft press materials and related internal memos 
  • Facilitate media interviews; arrange and facilitate media broadcast appearances 
  • Maintain media distribution lists; maintain database; track for trends and compile reports 
  • Provide support for U.S. and global media campaigns   
  • Manage communications around media invitations and media events; responsible for media monitoring and gathering press clips for the media relations team 
  • Assist with formulating strategic communication plans with Press Officers and Director of Media Relations  


  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in communications, journalism, public/media relations, or a related field; 
  • Deep dedication to the Center’s mission, values, and strategic objectives; 
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in progressive media, journalism, and/or public relations, and a track record of success in raising the visibility of political, social, and cultural issues and organizations, and shaping public debate. 
  • Broad awareness and deep understanding of the national media landscape and current and developing strategies for communicating effectively in a continually and rapidly evolving media environment; 
  • Exceptional writing, editing and messaging skills; 
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal skills; 
  • Strong intuition and instincts for translating trends and research findings into concrete communications opportunities—and an ability to move quickly and decisively to take advantage of them; 
  • Strong organizational skills and a proven ability to concurrently manage a large number and wide variety of projects with strict deadlines; 
  • Knowledge of reproductive rights, legal/court systems in the U.S., and U.S. federal government and politics is a plus. 
  • Ability to travel within the U.S. as needed and flexibility to respond to pressing media requests, sometimes outside of business hours. 
  • Knowledge of media monitoring tools (Cision, Meltwater) and metrics preferred
