General Purpose and Scope of Position:

The Senior Director of Communications will run the day-to-day operations of the communications department and oversee the functional teams within communications including digital, editorial and content strategy/development. In this refreshed role, the Senior Director of Communications will serve as the right hand of the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) and serve as the primary liaison between this role and the department. The Senior Director of Communications will work closely with the Director of Communication Projects to make sure deadlines and key communications projects are met, but will primarily serve as the content point for the department and accountable for the operational implementation of the vision and messaging of the organization as established by the CMCO and other key executive team members. The Senior Director of Communications will lead in overseeing messaging, key press strategy decisions, content strategy, communications materials and work with the CMCO to set the broader strategy for the communications team in support of the work of the Center.

The Director will also serve as a key member of the Center’s management team, responsible for the day to day operations of their program as well as contributing to the Center's strategy.  He/she will embody the values of transparency, collaboration, and open communication to foster and inspire a positive team environment within and across departments. This individual must have demonstrated prior experience coaching, mentoring, and developing team members to drive performance in support of the Center's mission. The individual must be adaptable with the ability to judge multiple competing priorities, switching between strategic and tactical approaches. This position will be based in New York City.


The Senior Director of Communications' primary job responsibilities include, but not limited to:


  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the communications department and manage the functional teams within communications including digital, editorial and content strategy/development;
  • Serve as the right hand of the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) and serve as the primary liaison between this role and the department;
  • Ensure deadlines and key communications projects are met;
  • Serve as the content point for the department and accountable for the operational implementation of the vision and messaging of the organization as established by senior leadership;
  • Play crucial strategic role to continually survey the digital and creative landscape for upcoming opportunities and challenges—and working with colleagues within the department and among the Center’s program staff for coordinating strategies for responding to them, often on very tight timelines.
  • Lead in key press strategy decisions, communication materials and work with the CMCO to set the overall strategy for the communications team;
  • Ensure the communications department has high performing staff and structure in place to advance the goals of the department and organization; and,
  • Oversee the department budget.

Communications Strategy

  • Serve as a key advisor to the CMCO to lead the development, implementation and evaluation of integrated strategies to advance the Center’s brand identity and broaden awareness of its programs, priorities, and vision for the future of reproductive rights worldwide;
  • Increase the visibility of the Center’s work and achievements across key stakeholder audiences, including media, policymakers, donors, partners, and allies;
  • In partnership with outside consultants, firm and vendors, implement marketing strategies that will enable Center leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers; and,
  • Work with the senior team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.

Communications Team Management

  • Mentor and manage a team of 16+ staff to support the development and execution of communications strategies;
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality; and,
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities and conduct annual performance appraisals.

Communications Operations

  • Oversee development of all the Center communications, including the annual report, marketing/development collateral materials, electronic communications, website, social media, and events;
  • Strategize and oversee message research and development, and the creation of decks, talking points memos, and other vehicles for unifying the Center’s public-facing communications; and,
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning and staff development.


  • Minimum of 10+ years of experience with management of multi-disciplinary U.S. and international communications; 
  • Successful track record of developing and leading communications and marketing strategies and campaigns in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment;
  • Deep experience in media and press strategy including print, broadcast, digital and interactive media;
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring skills, and a calm, diplomatic demeanor—even in times of intense pressure; 
  • Experience managing a large team required;
  • Exceptional writing, editing and messaging skills;
  • Strong verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively;
  • Proficiency with project management tools; experience with Asana a plus;
  • Extremely sharp organizational skills and ability to manage large volumes of projects, tasks, and files;
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of strong personalities; sense of humor;
  • Ability to travel within and outside the U.S. as needed.

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Advanced degree in communications, journalism or related eld highly preferred.
