The Role:  

Under the supervision of our Senior Counsel and Senior Staff Attorneys, the Staff Attorney will be a critical member of the Center's U.S. Litigation Program team under the leadership of the Senior Director, Litigation.  The Center's Litigation Program brings impact litigation on reproductive rights and justice issues in federal and state courts around the country.  The Center's high-profile and fast-paced litigation often involves novel legal claims, and our groundbreaking cases have changed the law and improved the lives of women throughout the U.S.  

The individual who assumes this role must be able to work collaboratively with other litigation team members, across program and department teams, and with external partners as required in support of the Centers' mission.  The staff attorney must be tenacious, proactive, and contribute to a positive collegial work environment. 

Position placement: New York City preferred. May consider Washington, D.C.


As a team member of the U.S. Litigation Program, the Staff Attorney's primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct all aspects of litigation, including legal research and analysis, discovery and motion practice, assisting with trials and appeals.
  • Maintain client relationships, including providing compliance advice.
  • Supervise interns.
  • Represent the Center at public events, conferences, and coalition meetings.
  • Maintain other important institutional relationships.
  • Participate actively in program planning.
  • Work with Communications and Development departments to provide support and information, as needed, including handling press calls.
  • Work on other projects, as needed, such as legal analyses related to Center legislative and advocacy priorities.


  • Strong commitment to the Center's mission, purpose, and values.
  • J.D. required. Minimum of 3+ years' litigation experience, including judicial clerkship(s).
  • New York active bar membership required or willingness to become a member within 18 months of hire. (District of Columbia bar membership if permitted to be based in D.C.).
  • Outstanding legal analysis skills, including the ability to develop complex legal arguments.
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Superior communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to self-motivate, handle multiple tasks simultaneously and provide quick turnaround of assignments.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while continuing to maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to give and receive feedback and resolve conflicts constructively.
  • Experience with reproductive rights issues or with human rights, LGBTQ rights, racial justice, economic or social justice and ability to connect and integrate to reproductive rights. Experience working with or on behalf marginalized communities is a plus. Other relevant experience will be considered.
  • Ability to travel occasionally as needed.
