Supreme Court Vacancy Opens Door for Strong Voice on Reproductive Rights
The announcement of Supreme Court Justice David Souter’s retirement at the end of the term in June provides a critical opportunity for the President to nominate a candidate that will recognize constitutional rights, including a woman’s right to choose an abortion. The last Supreme Court decision on abortion, Gonzales v. Carhart, upheld the first-ever federal abortion ban in a 5-4 decision, undermining 30 years of precedent and opening the door for further attacks on a woman’s right to choose. With Justice Souter’s exit, a consistent supporter of abortion rights, it is critical that his replacement recognize the promise and principles of Roe.While the Center will not take a position on specific candidates, we will be closely monitoring developments as the nomination process heats up and be available to provide expert legal analysis, including background on current reproductive rights law and open cases threatening to undermine protections for reproductive rights.More information about abortion cases and the Supreme Court >,
