Johanna first joined the Center in 2011 and became Director of Capacity Building in 2016. Johanna oversees the Global Legal Program’s force multiplier efforts around the globe to build the capacity of and connections among lawyers, advocates, judges, and stakeholders, among others.
Johanna previously served as Legal Fellow, Legal Adviser and Manager for Projects and Operations, Deputy Director, and Interim Vice President of the Global Legal Program. She has extensive experience in the women’s rights and reproductive rights field including developing and operationalizing strategies to the next level of growth, conceptualizing capacity building initiatives, leading cross-programmatic and interdepartmental initiatives, building new partnerships, designing M&E models, and leading team-building initiatives.
Before coming to the Center, Johanna was an associate at White & Case LLP, where she conducted extensive pro bono work for the Center. Her previous work experience also includes UNFPA, the UN Office of the Human Commissioner for Human Rights, the Federation of Women Lawyers-Kenya, and CREA.
Johanna graduated from Columbia University’s School of Law and School of International and Public Affairs with a joint J.D./Master of International Affairs. During graduate school, she was actively involved in the Human Rights Clinic and worked on women’s rights issues in Zambia and Mauritania. She received her B.A. (summa cum laude) in international studies and French from Emory College.
