Nonnie S. Burnes

Nonnie S. Burnes, Assistant Secretary

Nonnie S. Burnes, Assistant Secretary, is a dedicated advocate for women’s reproductive rights.  She is on the Board of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, having just stepped down as Chair and having served as Interim President and CEO (2014).  She is on the Board of the management company for the insurance companies for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the affiliates, as well as on the boards of several of the insurance companies.  From 2007 to 2009, she served as the Commissioner of Insurance for Massachusetts, appointed by Governor Deval L. Patrick, and prior to that was an Associate Justice on the Superior Court for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, appointed by Governor William F. Weld (1996-2007).  While on the bench, Judge Burnes was the chair of both the Gender Equality Advisory Board and the Jury Management Advisory Committee.  Ms. Burnes was in the private practice of law with the firm of Hill & Barlow from 1977-1996.  During that time, Ms. Burnes was a commissioner on the State Ethics Commission; vice chair of the Boston Bar Association, and on the Board of directors of the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute and the Center for Law and Education.  She was a member of the visiting committee for Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government, Center for Ethics and the Professions.  Following state service, Ms. Burnes was a Senior University Fellow (2009-2012) at Northeastern University where she sits on the Board of Trustees.  She is currently chairing the Committee on Professionalism for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and is a member of the Board of the Boston Bar Foundation.  Ms. Burnes is a graduate of Wellesley College and Northeastern University Law School.  (Boston, MA)
