Law School Events

The Center's Law School Initiative works with a range of partners to host scholarly convenings to generate and explore new approaches to reproductive rights and human rights. Events range from informal roundtables to panel discussions and full-day academic symposia. We also work with law students and community organizations to sponsor conferences, career panels, classes, and other events.

Upcoming Events

October 30, 2015 - Symposium at NYU School of Law
Please join us on October 30, 2015 at 9:00am at NYU School of Law for What’s the Harm?: Understanding Reproductive Injustice. This day-long symposium will explore overly restrictive reproductive healthcare laws, and reframe the “harm” of these laws by looking at women’s experience with pregnancy, birthing, abortion, access to healthcare, and the criminal justice system. We will look at how these laws impact the practice of medicine, the doctor-patient relationship, and patient choice and dignity.  More info here.

Past Events

April 17, 2015 - Symposium at Case Western Reserve School of Law
On April 17, 2015, the Center cosponsored the 2015 Law Medicine Conference: The Rhetoric of Reproduction at Case Western University School of Law.  This symposium explored the ways in which courts, commentators and advocates have framed reproductive rights, rhetorically and doctrinally. Are reproductive rights best conceptualized as an aspect of privacy, liberty, or equality? How has the framing of abortion restrictions and protecting women’s health led to greater success for the anti-abortion movement? Is the use of contraception best understood as basic health care or as a morally fraught decision? How have sex- and race-selective bancs sought to exploit fears of eugenics and ultimately deny the agency of women of color? These and other issues were considered as panelists discussed the doctrinal, political, and rhetorical construction of reproductive rights. You can watch the full live cast including the Distinguished Lecture by Michele Bratcher Goodwin, Chancellor’s Professor of Law & Director of the Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Policy at UC Irvine School of Law.
